Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have a wide range of learning styles and levels. They are quickly engaged in activities when I am able to offer a variety of ways of doing things. Our school is a Title I school, and our students do receive free lunches.
The majority of students in my high school have a Hispanic background and come from Spanish speaking families.
Most of these students are native Spanish speakers and English is their second language. While English is limited in the home, they will greatly benefit from being able to research in the classroom.
The amount of students that come from low income families is also high. Several students live in camper trailers with their families. They do not have access to technology.
Despite challenges my students face everyday, they are also over-comers. Education is important to them. They want better things in life, they want the opportunity to go to college, they want good grades. They are willing to put their heart and soul into their work in order to make a better life for themselves and change their story.
My Project
Our school is very technology poor compared to other schools in the district. Students are having to use their own phones for research. This limits which students can participate in research based on who has data available to them. While this is a small project it is a start to at least allow group work research with a Chromebook.
Research is showing that anytime Problem Based Learning can be incorporated into students lessons they are more likely to retain the information learned and they invest in the project.
Problem Based Learning or PBL allows for multiple starting points and multiple ending points. It's not about getting the one exact answer rather it's about having multiple outcomes and continuing to be successful.
Having resources to do research projects will give students the opportunity to get away from worksheets and textbook work. They will be able to use their many talents to express themselves. They will be able to use their creativity to show what they are passionate about.
