This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Ever pushed a wheelbarrow? Ever had one tip over? Now, imagine trying it as a 10 years old. Not pretty. My school has amazing opportunities for students to learn in our schoolyard garden, but we just don't have a good way for students to move soil, mulch, plants, or produce.
My school has 735 students, who come from the big city.
We have dedicated ourselves to giving our students opportunities that every student should have, no matter where they live. For example, over the last 5 years we have transformed what was once just a parking lot into a 1 acre urban farm. Our students love the garden (and the food it supplies). They learn about topics that range from water conservation to erosion control to business marketing.
My Project
Our city veggie patch is growing strong, but we need to get students more involved. One way to do that is to have equipment that kids can use. Our trusty wheelbarrow is great for adults, but kids just can't seem to master it. That's where four wagons come in - they're kid friendly and they can carry plenty of plants, mulch, and whatever else we need in the garden and at the farm market stand.
My students are great and they love being involved in our garden.
With your help, we can connect them with exactly what they need to be successful. Thank you for being a part of our school and for believing in public education in America.
