Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Who does not like to watch the Wheel of Fortune game on TV? Guessing the word correctly while only seeing some of the letters gives us feeling of accomplishment or even a triumph! I want my students to experience similar emotions every day in class. Most of my second grade students are Hispanic and from non-English speaking low-income families.
Because parents have language barriers, many of my students do not have enough practice at home. They struggle with vocabulary development, using vocabulary in context, recognizing parts of speech, decoding, word recognition, and spelling. However, my students like to work in groups. Using educational games for group practice makes difficult concepts easy to grasp and provides tons of involving, hands-on practice at a variety of levels! Daily vocabulary group activities are the perfect way for my second graders to practice their academic skills and build truly supportive relationships towards each other.
Sight-words study games that I selected let students spin their way to reading and spelling confidence! Word Building Fun Activity Center is another fun way to practice language skills. I want to have these materials available to my students, and I hope to see how working as a team of learners will bring up their self-esteem and confidence to achieve goals they set for themselves.
If this proposal is funded, our students will be given an opportunity to get focused practice in the key reading areas. But most important, they can work together building class culture where everyone shares whatever they get- knowledge, happiness, and self-confidence! I want them to be excited about building academic skills as they follow along with interesting activities. If you choose to fund this project, my second grade students will benefit from your generosity for many years to come. Thank you in advance!
