My Students

Which sentence more vividly describes how the dog ran? "The dog ran fast." or "The spirited dog ran like the wind." By fourth grade, students should be able to use vocabulary to spice up their writing; however, many of my students struggle to understand how to use new vocabulary skills.

I teach 20-25 fourth grade students in a Title I school in Missouri.

Our school is a high poverty school, with 80-90% of our students qualifying for free and reduced lunches. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but most have one thing in common--they need love. Our community constantly has families that are moving in and out of our school, and our kids are looking for stability and adults who care.

My Project

I feel that I have been blessed with the opportunity to provide the students I teach with a quality education and the chance to experience things that they might not get to experience otherwise. My students work hard to do their best each and every day, but many of them seem to be stuck in a rut when it comes to writing. They are unable to take their writing beyond those basic skills they learned prior to entering fourth grade, because they do not understand how to use vocabulary effectively. The vocabulary resources I have requested will give my class a chance to break down the different vocabulary skills that are present in most pieces of literature like figurative language, similes and metaphors, homophones, multiple meaning words, and context clues. By gaining a better understanding of how to use vocabulary, my students will be able to take what they have learned and apply those vocabulary skills as they transform their writing into works of art.

By donating to this project, you are providing my class with materials that will help to establish a solid vocabulary foundation that will help my students to branch out in their writing and better comprehend what they are reading.

In addition, these skills will help them long-term as they expand their use of vocabulary in everyday conversations.
