Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"A great coach never achieves greatness for himself or his team by working to make all his players alike." No two students are alike, so we must differentiate our instruction to meet the needs of each student.
In Silicon Valley, my STEAM school serves a truly remarkable group of socioeconomically disadvantaged students who genuinely love to learn.
Despite some of the hardships my students have faced, my class shows up ready to learn every day! They are a very caring bunch and I would love for them to see that other people (some they don't even know) care about them, too! By bringing hands-on materials to my classroom and increasing their access to technology, I hope to inspire my students to think outside the box and strive for non-conventional solutions to common scenarios.
My Project
My students need headphones and styli to use with our tablets. We're fortunate to have a class set of tablets, but need these accessories to fully utilize the devices. In my classroom, my students are at a variety of academic levels. Some students are reading chapter books independently, others are still working on basic letter-sound correspondence. Some students have mastered their basic math facts, while others need more time to reach proficiency. These tablet accessories will allow me to assign individual activities on the tablets, so each child gets the academic instruction he or she needs. Some children can be watching a video of math instruction at a higher level, while I teach a small group a different topic, and a third group can be reviewing the previous day's lesson through a math game. Differentiating my lessons in this way will allow all students to grow at their own pace.
In addition to increasing individual learning outcomes, providing unique learning opportunities for individuals will also let me work more frequently with small groups of students.
I picture a class where 1/3 of my students are working on their tablets, 1/3 are practicing a skill through another means, and 1/3 are working with the teacher. As lessons go by, each group will get more time with me to really solidify the concepts they are working on.
