I have been teaching for 13 years, and I still enjoy going to work every morning. Some days I don't see how I'm making a difference, but my students let me know I do. I'm always working in my classroom and with my students to improve my teaching style to better serve them.
My school is a Title I school with a 95% African American population.
My students are good readers but struggle with comprehension especially with informational text. They also do not have a large academic vocabulary background and their critical-thinking skills are weak.
The use of dictionaries is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in language arts. My students are good readers but struggle with vocabulary. I am requesting a class set of hardcover student dictionaries. As a teacher, using a dictionary will help my students with spelling, pronunciation, grammar, and writing.
Students with basic dictionary skills will be able to transfer this skill to the use of other reference books that they will use in the future to conduct research or find information.
Using a thesaurus is also a great tool for increasing students vocabulary skills. They are able to explore synonyms and antonyms to make their writings more creative.
