Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My AP US Government and Politics students are a diverse group. While many come from a 9th grade honors team, there are quite a few who are trying an advanced class for the first time. These sophomores, despite some trepidation over the demands of an AP course, are showing great enthusiasm and perseverance. They’ve taken up the AP challenge because they want to succeed in high school, college and beyond.
Imagine entering your first Advanced Placement class as a sophomore when it really hits you, "I have to start thinking about college, for real!" Yes, teachers and parents have been talking about college for a long time, but now the grade in an AP course and on the test could really have an impact on college acceptance.
Each day, my AP kids come ready to learn. I am new to teaching this course and they have placed a lot of trust in me to guide them through a successful year. They have made the commitment to me and the course and I want to give them the tools they need to succeed.
My Project
For my project, I am requesting 10 laptops and a charging cart because computers in the classroom will allow my AP US Government and Politics students to have immediate access to current events, important sites such as the Library of Congress and a multitude of other resources such as surveys, economic statistics and demographics. Currently, we do not have a dedicated text, school computer labs are not always available and convenient, and students have varying access to technology outside of school. These constraints mean that I must provide all readings and research materials, which deprive the students of a sense of ownership in the course and important opportunities for academic growth.
Immediate access to current events related to US government and politics, practice choosing reliable sources and the ability to do authentic, student-generated research are vital to student success.
Computers in the classroom will give my students the means to take control of their own learning and to more fully benefit from the Advanced Placement model. This will undoubtedly enhance their college readiness.
