This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Working in a Title I school on the outskirts of the city, I knew that my students would be coming from a diverse community with many beautiful characteristics and also with many struggles; both financial and societal. No matter the obstacles they may face, there is no trait more prevalent in our community than resilience.
My students know how to think outside the box and they are thirsty for academic challenges!
This has been a gift; the opportunity to challenge my students, just as they challenge me, developing engaging and thought-provoking activities and lesson plans daily.
Their creativity, empathy, and willingness to expand their minds to embrace the experiences of others is what drives me daily to give them the education they deserve.
My Project
Right now, there is a door at the back of my room that leads to a small, overgrown courtyard. With your help, my students and I will be able to transform this area into a garden of scientific exploration!
My students will have the opportunity to grow their own food, and study a plant's life cycle first hand!
Gardening requires observation, problem-solving, and getting your hands dirty. These are first-hand, real-world experiences that not many children get from a traditional classroom these days. Yet, the skills and real-world knowledge they will leave with are undeniably powerful.
