What's On Your iPod?

My students need 4 classroom iPod nanos with video capability for using streaming videos to create individualized lessons and scavenger hunts through their DC History course. They will also be used to download content-based podcasts.

Mr. S. McKinley Technology High School
Washington, DC Grades 9-12

In a population that is drawn from the four quadrants of DC, there is distinct differences between those who have and those who do not. I want to level the playing field in order to make the learning opportunities available to everyone. My school is a technology and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school and since it opened in 2003-04 has done relatively little to maintain the most up to date technology for the students across the school. I seek to integrate the idea of technology and a 21st Century classroom with the topics I teach in Social Studies- Global Perspectives, DC History, US Government and World Geography. All of these courses lend themselves to the ideas of what I would do with the classroom iPods.

My school is one of the DC Public Schools to have been gifted a year subscription to Discovery Education Streaming for videos and images. Now, how to use such a wonderful gift becomes the challenge. Having classroom computers would help, but I travel between 4 classrooms for 5 classes. I teach 2 in the Library during the school day. How can we bring the videos and information to students in a way that captures them and ultimately inspires them? How can we make the computer a mobile learning unit so that the students can search the city to discover the wealth and richness of DC History and the obvious influence of politics and international diplomacy?

The iPod is an extension of most students (those who have one). They listen to music while doing most things: walking, running, eating, reading, homework, even in class (ahem). I want to create videos, have them download podcasts, create scavenger hunts and self-guided tours that will take the students out of the classroom setting and help them view the most influential city in the world as their learning center. Since the iPod can be used as more or less a hard-drive, they can easily tote the iPod from location to location fulfilling a lesson plan already loaded to the iPod playlist.

By filling this request, you will have made it possible for students to awaken to a world that is their home, unexplored and untapped in richness for them. Similarly, it will show how much further they can expand the use of their iPod to synchronizing not just music but educational tools available on the web, such as podcasts, videos and images. Additionally, this gift will be used not solely by me, but across the Social Studies Department in trying to be innovative in using the technology that the students are most familiar with in their daily lives.
