Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my classroom are eager to learn, passionate, and hard-working. They are an extension of my family. They inspire me every single day. I want to encourage them to try their best, learn from their mistakes and start to see their full potential.
Class transformations are a great way to engage students in learning; I'd love to transform my classroom into a restaurant to help students learn about the importance of managing money.
What better way to help students understand the idea of a budget, taxes, and paying bills, than to take them to a "Decimal Diner" to help them learn a real world application of money management.
My Project
My students love when I can transform the classroom into something special. I know that decorating the room does more than make it look different, it gives my students a unique and engaging learning experience they are sure to remember.
Transforming our classroom into a restaurant is the perfect opportunity to teach my students the basics of financial literacy and money management.
In our "Decimal Diner", students will be given a hands-on experience that would allow them to calculate total cost, stay within budget, add tax, and determine the most cost effective options for their family to eat out.
Using the table cloths, candles, and aprons, I can set up our classroom to look like a real restaurant. Students can have menus from local places and they will be given a budget that they must stay within. They will have to make choices about what to eat (and not to eat) in order to make sure they have enough money to pay the bill. The guest checks and holders will allow them to calculate the total cost of their bill, add tax, and determine how much change they will receive.
As an extra extension, students can calculate how long they would need to save their earnings from chores in order to have enough money to cover the cost of their meal. This gives students al lesson on money management, the importance of saving, and cost effectiveness. It also gives them real word application of math that will keep them engaged.
