Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school where every child is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Our students come from tough inner city backgrounds and they come to our school to get the best education they can. They are often not exposed to many things we take for granted. Their lives are often consumed with violence, and loss outside of our school doors.

Students in my class have often been to several other schools and have significant learning gaps.

I make it my mission to catch these students up and have them be at grade level. I try and expose them to new ideas and experiences daily. I promote the importance of education in their lives. Students are eager to be the best they can be.

My Project

I think that current events are just as important as learning civics, history, and geography in social studies. Time for Kids is informative, and set up in in a way kids can understand. And they also incorporate science articles as well such will also enhance our science studies. Nonfiction is always tough for kids, and using Time for Kids will be an excellent way to practice this genre of reading. Along with reading, students can also give oral reports on their own of articles read, or we can expand their research skills by having them investigate topics further. Plus students really seem to enjoy reading them.
