Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Multimedia students will begin filming a new broadcast titled "What's In Your Book Bag?", a book talk broadcast for high school students. To enhance student literacy across the curriculum multimedia students will read young adult age & age appropriate novels provided by your generosity. Students in teams of three will videotape segments about the novel. The team will edit the videotape, transfer it to DVD and deliver it to English teachers to play in their classrooms so other students can see which book titles might interest them.

Living in a poor socio-economic area, many of my students are faced with no hope. Having a great classroom library of books and reading area where can aspire their hopes and dreams is key to creating productive citizens. Students need books that have some type of connection to them. Students have shown great interest in the authors chosen. The students love the multimedia class and the videography. Filming book talks will increase interest in reading. Projects will include a book talk/book reading show that will be distributed via DVD to English classes and lower elementary grades.

A bookcase is needed as well as book titles. Students cannot always find what they are looking for at the school library or popular books are always checked out. Students need access to reading material they can identify with as well as enjoy. Reading will lead to better writing & more literate citizens. Videotaping book talks shows will put students up front to their peers encouraging others to pick up a book. The books & bookcase will serve multi-purposes. It will be an open library for students to choose books at will & serve as the backdrop for the filming. The additional bookcase will also house books provided to the class by a former co-worker that is no longer teaching & the new books that are purchased through your generosity. The books and bookcase will also create a backdrop appropriate to videotape. This area will be used to create a "Barnes and Noble" type reading center where students can read.

Your help with this project will ensure my students access to the latest in teen reading best sellers while enhancing their video skills by adding different projects to the curriculum. Whether students are entering the workforce or post-secondary education, good reading skills are essentials and your donation will make that possible for students that do not have resources for themselves to read excellent books.
