What's in the Wardrobe? Stocking the Choir Closet with Essentials
Help me give my students the essential supplies needed for our choir closet that will improve their health, safety, appearance, cleanliness, uniformity, and well-being.
My singers come from diverse backgrounds and attend a large urban high school of more than 3,800 students. More than 50% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Approximately 25% of our school are English language learners (ESL), including refugees and students new to our country. Approximately 25% of my students have special needs with an individual instruction plan.
Many students are not able to pay choir fees or provide their own supplies due to financial need: therefore we try to provide almost everything that the choir students will need for performances so that all can participate.
Many of the students have language barriers, making it hard to communicate with parents regarding costume needs. Although we have great parent support, it is not possible for parents to pay or donate all the funds needed to train and equip a choral program with more than four hundred singers.
Our choirs provide a community and global connection for students. My students are very proud of their performances and want to look and sound their best on stage.
My Project
With choir classes numbering more than fifty singers, our students use many consumable items during a year of performances, contests, and rehearsals.
The students have costume needs such as bobby pins, black socks, knee high hose, velcro, bandages, first aid kits, and under-arm shields that get used throughout the year.
At many of our rehearsals as well as our Madrigal Dinner and Spring Choir competition, we have need for meals and refreshments. Many students do not have time to eat between school and programs and I'm asking for needed snacks that I can have available, such as the WELCH'S Mixed Fruit Snacks and the Frito-Lay Classic Mix Variety Pack.
We write our daily agenda on a whiteboard and need dry erase supplies and we are always in need of sharpened pencils and pens to write notes on our music and compose our weekly reflections. CDs are used to record and store pictures, program song files, and instrumental accompaniments while gloves are needed when we sing our outdoor concerts in the winter.
Many of the consumable items that are in our cache of supplies will be provided by this grant, thus allowing our hard earned fundraising extracurricular funds to be used for new music, new outfits, and field trip buses. We will be able to stretch our budget because we will not have to buy smaller items that tend to eat up so much of our budget without providing a long lasting benefit. The essentials provided in this grant will allow us to expand our performance outreach and improve our variety of music selections, as well additional opportunities we can provide our students through contest participation and visiting artists.
