Mrs. Edwards from Charlotte NC is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 1 environmental test lab kit, 2 soil sampling tubes, and 6 screen sieves.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are a part of a Math, Science and Environmental Science magnet school with a high poverty rate. Don't let the poverty rate fool you though, these students are rich in knowledge and desire to learn. Being an Environmental Science school, my students are continually looking at ways to learn and experience new things while making a positive impact on the world around them.
In order to help make the world a little nicer for the future we try to do many hands on activities and lessons which allow the students to directly work with and impact their small part of the world. Currently my students do spend an entire quarter learning and studying rocks and minerals. The collect dirt samples from their homes, playgrounds, and school. Then use those samples to determine what is in their dirt. However, with the limited amount of current sifters and dirt kits, the lessons do not currently allow the students to get the full picture of what they are trying to learn about their dirt and its health.
The students especially enjoy and benefit when learning is hands on and they are able to be actively involved. With proper soil testing kits, sieves, and soil tubes the students will be able to better test and examine what is really in the dirt; thus making their learning more relevant and engaging.
Help my students learn what is in their dirt and how they can impact the dirt for the better. Allow them the opportunity to actively participate and learn by doing. Help my students learn how they are impacting the world around them, and how they can make improvements to that world.
