Teaching in a low income school with nearly half of the population military gives me the opportunity to experience many different students as well as learning style. In spite of the many changes and challenges they face, I am seeking to provide a constant, creative, and intentional learning experience.
My students are very amiable, persistent, and witty.
The students love to move, read, and they appreciate encouragement. Many of them are being raised in single parent households with one or more siblings and receive free and/or reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These factors may preclude them from receiving the early life experiences that many of us may see as “the norm”.
Each day the students come into my classroom, my focus is on how they can grow and how they can reach their full potential with my help. Though their home lives are out of my control, their school experiences are my responsibility and in my control. Finding innovative ways to achieve this goal gives me hope that I will be able to inspire these learners so they may continue to flourish in their academic excellence.
My Project
These read aloud books will help struggling readers learn to track print with one to one correspondence. It will allow them to focus on the content in order to build comprehension and will later allow them to read on their own.
Reading text aloud to students affords them to be able to hear someone read a story to them; especially if no one is able to read to them at home.
This helps to build students' confidence in literacy which will later develop a love for reading. Often times students are hesitant to pick up a text because they are uncertain of their ability to read the text. The read aloud books helps to build them up!
