My students come from various backgrounds. Many live in rural areas and come from low income families. My students are very eager to learn through the use of hands-on learning experiences. They really love learning when teaching involves experiences that will prepare them for their adult life. My school is a military-impacted school. The students are so enthused when we honor their military members by having a luncheon for them and allowing the students to serve them.
Many of my students have parents or grandparents who serve in the military.
My students are inspired with excitement especially when their learning provides them with a hands on experience and takes them outside to focus on the environment in which they live. Their eyes beam with excitement when they get to go outside to learn about environmental science and health instead of just learning through textbooks. They love to come up with kid-inspired ideas to learn about environmental science with hands-on learning. It really excites me when my students are eager to learn about victory gardens and to grow one of their own.
My Project
My students need additional raised garden beds in order to grow a variety of vegetables. They will measure the height of their vegetables as they grow, determine the area and perimeter of the gardens, and learn how to plant and maintain a school garden. When harvesting time comes, my students will pick the vegetables in order to sell them to our school cafeteria for lunch.
Not only will my students learn how to plan a garden, they will earn a profit from the produce they raise.
My students will learn life long skills of becoming a gardener for healthy eating.
