What's Going on in Our World?

Help me give my students Scholastic News and Science Spin Magazines so they will have a chance to increase their nonfiction reading skills.

My Students

My students are a highly diverse group of students in many areas. They are both ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. They are a curious group of students who also show a diversity in their views, as well as their learning styles.

Our school thrives on honoring the individuality of each student and valuing what they bring to our school community.

Students are encouraged to be independent, critical thinkers and to learn more about the world around them through books, magazines, technology, and each other.

My Project

Our classroom theme is Wonder and Exploration. We are currently exploring space, but our theme is permeated throughout everything we do as we are not just encouraging our students to Wonder, but to go and Explore and find out more about where their wonderings are taking them. Using Scholastic News and Science Spin Magazines is a way to help my students become more aware of the world around them and to think deeply about the issues that are facing our world. Students will use the magazines to Wonder and Explore weekly about what's going on around them, share their thinking with their classmates, and increase their Nonfiction Reading Skills in the process.

This project will make a difference in my students’ lives as they will not only gain comprehension skills that meet the Common Core Standards with the variety of text structures presented in Scholastic News, but it will also connect to our classroom theme.

My students will be able to engage in current events that relate to space and further enrich and deeper their learning.
