Our school is a magnet school, bringing together students and families from many cultures. We are always looking for opportunities for enrichment because we have many students above the 90th percentile who need to be challenged. All of our students are avid readers and thinkers, constantly asking for more opportunities to learn.
Many of our students' parents do not speak English or have the resources at home to help their children academically.
I am the Learning Behavior Specialist who supports multiple grade levels. I'm constantly seeking new ways to encourage our reluctant learners.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with proper nutrition and have no idea what a balanced meal looks like. They bring hot chips for breakfast, candy for lunch, and sugary granola bars for a snack. They don't know how to prep fruits and vegetables or cook simple dishes. Some students live in food deserts and don't even have access to fresh food.
With childhood obesity on the rise, now is the time to educate our students on proper nutrition and food preparation.
Using the materials purchased through this grant, I will be running an after school program aimed at teaching students basic food preparation and cooking skills. Along the way, they will learn about nutrition, practice reading skills through recipes and directions, and practice math skills by doubling recipes.
Since we do not have a functioning kitchen at our school, getting this program started will require extensive equipment. You can help bring this program to life for my students. Donate today!
