I teach family and consumer science at a small rural high school. My students are mainly juniors and seniors, but I do have the occasional freshman or sophomore. My classes are considered electives, so my students have chosen to take my classes.
FCS education is meant to prepare students for life outside of the classroom, so what I love most is hearing my students explain how they used something we learned in the class outside of school.
I love hearing about the meals they prepared on their own or healthy eating choices they made over the weekend. I love it when they tell me how they opened their first bank account and how they mediated a disagreement between friends. I love seeing them walk down the hall in shorts they made in class.
FCS education is important for everyone, and the diversity of my classroom is a testament to that fact. Our school has a large Hispanic population, so I have been introduced to authentic cuisine from Mexico and El Salvador in my nutrition classes. For several of my students, my class is the only mainstream class they have all day.
My Project
These mixers would help to update the kitchens in my FACS classroom. Right now, I have four different kitchens with a different brand mixer in every kitchen. It is difficult to give accurate instructions when every kitchen has to follow different steps to use their mixer. I also feel like students waste a lot of time tracking down mixer accessories that have found their way to other kitchens. If every kitchen had an identical mixer, the accessories would be interchangeable and instructions could be streamlined.
Learning how to cook healthy meals is an important skill for every student, and adding these mixers to the classroom kitchens will help students learn new cooking skills.
