NRCC School is a small school 17 miles north of Steamboat Springs in Colorado. Our school is an Expeditionary Learning school which means our students are often found learning Beyond 4 Walls. Our students experience our beautiful mountain surrounding during Outdoor Education and Wellness classes. They also experience field work/hands on learning experiences where they learn from members of our community. Each semester our middle school students produce a culminating final product for two subject areas, typically one for science and one for social studies. These product showcase each student's learning that has taken place over the course of the semester. It is their moment to shine and put their knowledge into action.
This spring my students will be creating an outdoor garden and setting up bee hives. We will use the bees to study our ecology unit and learn about the impacts we have on our environment.
Bees have a major impact on food supply and they are dying off in massive numbers.
My class will study the impact bees have as pollinators of our food supply. We will also investigate some of the possible contributors to their decline in population. Students will also explore their personal footprint on Earth and how to reduce it's impact.
