Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students often have to sacrifice the things we take for granted. They live in a rural area with no access to public transportation, few public housing options, and little opportunity for upward mobility. They come from homes where there is often not enough. When I say they do not have enough, I mean there is not enough food, shelter, love, money, attention, etc. Poverty is so prevalent that most of my students do not realize they are impoverished. While it may be a blessing they do not realize the depth of their poverty, they often miss out on opportunities to view learning as a curious, intriguing, and fun experience. They have been trying to get by for so long that they have forgotten how enjoyable learning can be.
My Project
We need these books to fill our first free little library. We currently have many YA novels that were donated, but we want to add children's books since that is our targeted age range. We tried to find popular, relevant, and durable books for the library since we know they will be read and reread many times over.
We hope that by introducing children to multicultural books as well as those that teach pre-kindergarten skills, we can help improve literacy in our rural town.
The addition of children's books in multiple languages will also hopefully help students improve their English language skills. Our biggest hope is that parents will spend time reading these books with their children, helping them further bond and encourage their children to become lovers of literature.
