The cost of twelve sets of leveled readers for early grades is $504, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I am a special-education teacher who teaches third- and fourth-grade students. I have twelve students who are learning-disabled and who are all on a kindergarten or first-grade reading level. This is my second year teaching but my first in the public school where I currently work.
When the kids go to our classroom library to pick out books, there are far too few books available on their reading level. The library that was given to the class contains mainly third- and fourth-grade books; this would be fine for most classes, but not for a class with such struggling readers. The students have read the few books in the library that are on the appropriate level over and over. Even though I try to buy books to add to the library that will be appropriate for the students, it becomes too expensive for me to supply the library myself.
For these children, reading is a struggle to begin with, so for them to have to go to a library with books that they know they cannot read is especially discouraging and sad. I am asking for funding to purchase new books for the library so that these kids get a chance to read books that will let them grow as readers, not hinder their progress.
