Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school is a very special place to learn. It's a unique school in that it's very small. Every teacher on campus knows each child very well and everyone works together as a team to help ensure every child's success.
At our school 63% of our population qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
Additionally, most of our students are provided free breakfast each morning as well. 65% of our students are Hispanic, which is above the average for our city.
I'm fortunate enough to teach 28 eager second graders every single day. Regardless of their background, all kids come to school looking for an exciting place to learn.
My Project
STEM has become an integral part of teaching in the elementary school classroom. Students need to be prepared to think outside the box. They must be able to look at a problem, look at the materials provided, and work out a solution on their own without simply waiting for the teacher to write the steps on the board.
We are preparing children for jobs that we don't even know exist yet.
We must provide them with opportunity to think independently and critically when faced with a challenge.
With the blocks, balls and other building supplies I have requested, kids will have a chance to look at a problem, and choose the material they think will best solve the problem. By providing choice, I'm encouraging my students to think deeply about how to best solve their problem, as well as to test our their own hypothesis and how to think flexibly if their ideas don't work at first. In order to have these opportunities, I need to provide my students with a large variety of tools.
