Our school is located in a remote area of Alaska that is full of rolling hills, rivers, and lakes, and an abundance of wildlife from birds, moose, caribou, bears, and more. The many families of our students live on the abundance of wildlife for their survival.
Our town of Tok, is the first settlement that travelers reach when traveling the Alcan Highway after leaving Canada.
My students live in a small community with about 1000 people living year round within the immediate area. We experience some of the coldest weather in the state. Students love to be outside in the snow, sledding, mushing dogs, or just going for walks. Families teach their children how to safely enjoy the outdoors all year long. So many students love to read on the cold winter nights.
My Project
My students are really enjoying reading books that come in series. Often enough, students are looking at the end of their books to see if there are other books by with the same characters and by the same authors. It surprises me, how much my students want to read books that are developed in series.
My students keep making lists of books that they want to read, which I put together as a project.
They are currently fascinated by the Land of Story series and Bones series. We also need some baskets to keep the sets together where all students have access to them. Our library has a few of them, but not the whole set. I want to keep the reading momentum going.
