My Students

I teach at an elementary school on Oahu, Hawaii. Origins of the school can be traced back to the sugar plantation days in the late 1800s. It is one of the oldest schools in our district and a very large school. We service over 1,000 students.

My school is a Title I school, meaning that over half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The various ethnic backgrounds of our students contribute to the rich diversity on campus. One-third of my classroom is composed of English Language Learners.

My Project

Learning to tell time is one of the more difficult math concepts for my second graders. Looking at an analog clock and trying to learn how to read it is not as effective as having a hands-on learning experience through Judy clocks and dry erase lapboards.

Judy clocks will make learning to tell time engaging and interactive.

Many of my students confuse the two hands and what happens when time gets closer to the next hour. The gears on the Judy clocks show the relationship between the hour and minute hands as time progresses. This will help my students better understand and master the concept of telling time. Students will use dry erase lapboards to write and explain the process they used to tell time and for solving word problems involving time. Lapboards will give my students an engaging way to share and internalize their thinking.
