This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school. Many of our students live in single-parent homes. The number of English language learners increase each year. Most of our students get breakfast at school and a sizable number are part of the Backpack Program where students take home a bag of food over the weekend. The surrounding neighborhoods have what the students call "candy stores." These are not official stores, but someone's residence where you can purchase snacks. There are no signs, but the children know where they are. The students utilize these stores, especially on the weekend.
I grew up in a town that was once labeled the poorest town in the United States.
I understand my students: they want to learn. My students love working in groups and enjoy helping each other. The students absolutely embrace technology.
My Project
Students will use these materials to get into character in our annual African American History Program. The costumes will be used to represent famous male and female athletes. Certainly, students are encouraged to take an interest in a variety of fields, but sports continue to be the mainstay across America. Students are already excited.
Our theme is athletes who made a difference in the world.
Athletes such as Doug Williams, Simone Biles, Jackie Robinson, Florence Griffith Joyner, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Serena Williams will be included in the showcase. Also, this year our school-wide theme centers around sports and teamwork. Groups of students will also perform a dance routine to a variety of sports-themed songs.
I feel it is important for young boys to get inspired by young athletes such as Doug Williams, the first African American quarterback to win the Super Bowl. Our young girls can see themselves in Simone Biles and Serena Williams. Our black history program is always centered on representation, which is essential in the lives of young African American children. Sports is just one of MANY opportunities for our young people today.
