What, The Earth Isn't Flat!?!?!

My students need 13 different science, social studies and math hands on manipulatives and reinforcement activites such as bingo, an overhead kit, activity cards, x-rays, and the Adventure Earth: Earth & Space Science Game.

I am a third-grade teacher at a school in North Carolina. I teach a class of about twenty-two students. I have a very diverse set of children. I have many who come from a home in which English is their second language. Others come from a single-parent home, while others come from very impoverished families.

As the yeas pass, I realize that my children make it all the way to third grade with many misconceptions. They have learned many things through TV or through hearsay which are complete wrong. It amazes me each with what my kids think they know. In third grade we learn many new concepts that my children have had no experience with. They come with these misconceptions and it is hard to retrain their brain. The misconceptions my children have hinder their learning. With all these misconceptions I am at a fork in the road. I want to teach them the truth but I have no resources to do so. All I have to teach them with is my voice and a few books. With such limited resources it is hard to convince my children that what they learned is wrong. They heard something on the TV, or in music, or from a friend and what I say could never be true. I am asking you to help my children learn with these resources.

I am asking for many pictures that are blown up to show what the earth, moon and sun really look like. I am also asking for a few map activities to help my children visualize what a continent looks like or what the earth looks like. To a person who comes from a family with unlimited access to knowledge, it may seem a little odd for me to ask for these items. But for my children this is a golden opportunity. They don't have access to the internet, or to the library. All they have is maybe a TV with no cable, radio and other people.

Please consider filling this grant so I am better prepared for all these misconceptions. I want my third grade class going through life remembering all the things they learned in third grade. These resources will only help imprint this in their brains. Thank you in advance for your support and you will never know the impact you will have on my children.
