Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine having only 28 copies of a book for an entire school to share. This situation makes it so my students do not truly get to know a text and even miss out on classics which students in more affluent areas take for granted.
My students are 9th-grade students at a high-poverty high school in Arizona.
They come from diverse backgrounds and classes contain a great deal of racial diversity. They all have dreams and desires but have often not been pushed to their full potential. Our school's mission to create students who are college and career ready and in both my regular and Honors English classes, I want to end the year confident that my students are on the right path by exposing them to challenging works of literature.
My Project
With the donation of 40 copies of A Tale of Two Cities, my students will have the opportunity to read a classic of English literature. Not only that, my school will have enough copies so that my students will be able to take the books home and get a deeper understanding of the novel. In addition, since my 9th graders do not take history classes, I will be able to expose them to the historical context of the novel: the French Revolution, a topic that should really engage them. From this novel study, my students will: learn about the French Revolution, comparing it to their understanding of the American Revolution, analyze literary devices such as characterization, setting, and plot, and explore the themes associated with revolution, love, sacrifice, and the commonalities between human beings, no matter their nationality.
This project is very important to me because my class goal for this school year is to have students understand why they learn about literature - because literature is both the transmission of culture and a call to action and understanding.
Literature allows the reader to reflect on her society and decide if something must be done to make it a better place for humankind.
