My students need non-fiction text to help them to see that the real world can often be just as surprising and intriguing as make-believe and to help them analyze and understand text.

My Students
Our students are special because they overcome adversity on a daily basis. We are a Title I school and our students come from diverse circumstances.
Even though our students are challenged by life everyday, they overcome those challenges and thrive in the classroom.
Our school has teachers that are amazing at taking what little resources we have and stretching them out. It's amazing what we can do with just a little extra help. Our students are deserving, caring, and want to learn.
My Project
Reading nonfiction text helps students develop background knowledge which students need to make meaning connections with what they are learning about the world.
Children learn by taking in pieces of information and categorizing them.
They do this all through their schooling years. When they reach adulthood they take this information, sort it, and think critically with it. They keep what they know, problem solve or create new ideas.
From as early as possible, children need an ongoing diet of non-fiction reading material and all throughout their schooling years. Your donation will help supply my reading groups with the much needed nonfiction texts such as: Longitude The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, to help my students make connections.
