Mrs. Stewin from Chicago IL is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need various pots and pans, cooking utensils, knives, cutlery, cutting boards, and colanders in order to learn how to prepare and make nutritious snacks in school.

Our preschool students are the kindest and most lovable people in the world, and they look forward to coming to school every day! They arrive at school with a smile on their face and a hug for those that greet them. Our preschool students are enthusiastic about learning! They love to explore, read books, and sing and dance with friends. Our preschool is a safe, exciting, and fun-filled environment for our students to learn and grow. Unfortunately, getting to school each day is a challenge for some of our young learners.
Our Pre-K through 8th-grade elementary school is located in a predominately African-American urban community in Illinois that is plagued by crime, violence, and poverty.
Our school is part of a large metropolitan school district that has high expectations for student learning... BUT is severely underfunded.
My students love to snack! Unfortunately, like many people, our snack choices are not always the most sensible or healthy. I want my students to learn that their snack choices impact them physically, emotionally, and mentally. I want my students to learn that there are foods that help us "GROW and GO" and foods that make us "Feel tired and S-L-O-W." We want students to learn that what goes into our bodies is important, and that selecting healthy snacks can be just as fun, just as delicious, and much more tasty than some of the snacks they already eat. Front loading this information in the 3 and 4 year old brains can make a tremendous life-long impact on their academic and social growth, and teaching students to be healthy eaters now might impact future generations. We will use these resources along with our existing curriculum to teach students about healthy food choices. We teach a unit on exercise so we can teach students how to make smoothies with fresh fruit and yogurt to replenish vitamins and nutrients (We already have a blender from a previous donors choose funded project). We can teach students how to make nutritious popsicles to replenish lost liquids during exercise using fruit, water and fruit juice. We teach a unit on bread so we can make our own bread and butter using the baking pans and kitchen utensils. We are a STEM School (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and having these materials can also help us with addressing these learning goals (example: math cutting apples into 1/2 and 1/4 and making comparisons using kitchen untensils).
