I teach 4th grade social studies and science. My elementary school's 4th grade is departmentalized, so I teach about 55 students each day. I have high expectations for them and believe they are capable of doing exceptional things if they put their minds to it!
I teach at a rural Title I elementary school in Tennessee where 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
My school provides students with snack pack food for the weekends, and we also annually purchase all needed school supplies so that parents are not financially burdened. It is our mission to make our school a place that meets the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical needs of the children.
My Project
The Tennessee Science Standards require 4th grade students to explore how human activity affects the land, evaluate design solutions based on effectiveness, and study how engineers have improved upon existing technologies. In order to meet these standards, I would like for my students to complete STEM projects.
My STEM project uses three kits that allow students to study in-depth, brainstorm ideas, and build models that will solve the environmental problems of an oil spill, a water shortage, and an energy crisis.
They have to research the topic online then design and create a solution to the situation. All materials needed are included with the kits, as well as lesson plans for the teacher. For example, after learning about an energy crisis, the students will build a model home that runs on solar power.
STEM projects benefit students in many ways, such as working together and using hands-on materials. Mastering science standards can be fun and interesting when students are highly engaged!
