My students need a web cam to observe real birds & journal their discoveries! We need other books and resources to learn what makes a bird, and how beaks, feet, and feathers help them to survive.
Kindergarten is often a chid's first impression of public education. Many may have attended a pre-K program or attended preschool. Many are enriched with home experiences. Unfortunately, many also receive neither. Our current kindergarteners come from a variety of economic and diverse backgrounds. A very large percentage of the students in our school speak a language other than English primarily at home. We have a very high rate of free and reduced-price lunch students.
That being said, it is evident that these children, and their peers, are sponges and are eager to be engaged learners and teachers to others.
We will use the tools we have to share and engage in meaningful and relevant learning so that each day is fun, and they leave looking forward to coming back for more!
My Project
My students need books, live web cams and manipulatives to help support a variety of learners, especially kinesthetic, and those with limited background knowledge or experiences. We want to watch real birds doing real things and make comparisons to other animals and research human effects on nature and birds specifically.
With Project Based Learning, students will be guided through inquiry that will allow them to discover, manipulate, and create, to foster and deepen their understanding about what makes birds unique from other animals, and how their various features such as beaks, feet, and feathers allow them to thrive and survive in various habitats.
