Most of the students that attend my school are Hispanic or from culturally-rich backgrounds. The students at our school receive 100% free lunch and breakfast daily. The students are engrossed and engaged in science. The one unit that is always difficult for them to master, is the weather unit. The reason I think this unit is so difficult for students is because the concept is very abstract if you are not able to experience it yourself. I would really love for my students to be able to have an inquiry approach to learning about weather and experiencing so that they can better understand.
Our fifth graders really struggle with taking the abstract concept of weather and applying it to their everyday lives. It is always the one unit that our students truly have difficulty with. Through the use of these materials, our fifth graders would get first-hand experience with a weather station and the tools used to measure different aspects of weather. Through the use of the cloud kits, each classroom would get hands-on experience with making clouds and becoming experts at identifying the different types of clouds. These materials would really bring the weather unit to life for our students and help the abstract concepts become a little more concrete, by experiencing weather through realia.
