I work in an alternative school setting. This means that the students have experienced any number of situations which caused them to lag behind their cohort class. Many of these students' families are below the poverty line. As such, these students are limited in the exploration and career classes that are offered at HMEC.
Our school strives to give students as many opportunities as possible to graduate, thus becoming interested, active, productive citizens of Blue Springs, Missouri.
With the weather station and wifi link, our school will be able to connect to WeatherUnderground. We will be one of 180,000+ weather monitoring stations which can be accessed all around the globe.
This STEM project would allow all HMEC students (and especially girls in technology) the exposure and opportunity to explore new career paths that they might not otherwise get.
Building on this idea, perhaps inviting local meteorologists to speak and scheduling field trips for pre-K - 12th grade to visit the National Weather Service Radar tower in Pleasant Hill, MO, would be logical next steps for our school.
