What Is Metamorphosis? We Would LOVE to Learn and Find Out!

My students need live specimens of ladybugs, caterpillars, and tadpoles; arts and crafts to reinforce the creatures, and scissors to create our projects.

I teach 30 full day Kindergarten students at an under-privileged school where 100% of my students are on free lunch, as well as come to school everyday to have breakfast. I also teach the other 2 Kindergarten classes for science. We have just recently finished up our science unit on plants and answering the important question, "What do seeds need to grow?" While watching the seeds grow, we wrote in our journals about what our seeds looked like each day and sketched pictures of what our seed was doing each day. Now that spring is hopefully around the corner, I would like to teach my students about metamorphosis. Kindergartners love hands on activities, and with this unit, I would like to be able to give them that opportunity. I would like to raise caterpillars into butterflies, and also tadpoles into frogs. I believe that my students would take a greater understanding of what exactly "Metamorphosis" is, if they can witness it first hand. While we were growing our seeds, my students were so excited to come into the room everyday and see whose seeds might have grown over night or whose needed more water. They were very enthusiastic about growing their "own" plant. I want to be able to encourage this kind of excitement and anticipation in learning about science. I believe that raising caterpillars and tadpoles would be an excellent way for my students to learn a very big concept in a fun way. It would also teach them responsibility. They would be responsible in making sure that the critters are doing well everyday, and we would journal about them as well. We would keep track of how many days it takes for our friends to finally become their destiny!
