What is Life Really Like on the International Space Station?
My students need copies of the book "Endurance" for a school-wide literature circle, part of our preparation for our interview with an astronaut aboard the ISS. All staff & students will read and discuss this book.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a public school with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. My school is a school of choice, with students randomly selected based on a lottery system. They come from all across our city, drawn by our high standards, high expectations and rigorous, thoughtful approach to curriculum. Part of our philosophy is to provide students with all of the tools needed for current and future success.
Our students partner with professionals in our community for hands-on/ real world engineering experiences.
We currently offer courses and clubs in robotics, engineering, programming and rocketry. In 2018, we are adding Amateur Radio and our students will have the opportunity to interview an astronaut on the International Space Station hopefully in late 2018.
My Project
The book "Endurance: A Year in Space, A Lifetime of Discovery" by Scott Kelly gives the reader a first hand look at life aboard the International Space Station. Reading this book will help students formulate questions to ask the astronaut and provide a clear context for the interview. These copies will be rotated amongst all classes so that each student and staff member on campus has the opportunity to read to read it and participate in the school-wide literature circle. Language Arts classes will use some of the themes in writing activities and science classes will explore some of the scientific topics discussed, especially those focusing for living in Space for extended periods of time. "Endurance" is also a shining example of how a vision combined with hard work can make dreams a reality and seemingly impossible, possible. We hope that Scott Kelly's experiences will help our students see the possibilities beyond the inner-city, dream big, set goals and work towards them for a bright future.
