What is a Phoneme? Learning Language Sounds in Action!

Help me give my students materials that will help them break down oral language into parts they can "hear" and touch. They can tap, move, swipe, and blend words using items such as the magnetic chips & felt.

My Students

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work as a Reading teacher with some kindergarten and first grade students, who need a little additional support in reading and writing. My students enjoy coming to reading class and being part of a small group that can focus on the skills and strategies they need to be a successful reader and writer.

Many of my students come from low income families who have very little prior experience with language and being read to at home.

My Project

These materials will be used during small group instruction in language and reading skills. The items such as felt squares can be used to help students visually "hear" and see the bigger parts of syllables in words. The unifix cubes can represent phonemes in a given word and offer tangible support for students learning to hear letter sounds and blend sounds to make a word.

My goal is to make language learning interactive, fun, and retainable.

Once students have a better understanding of how sounds work, letter learning, word decoding, and other reading foundational skills will become easier.
