My Students
Our elementary school is a growing, dynamic neighborhood school of about 340 students in Corvallis, Oregon. It is a Title I school and has a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds - socioeconomically, racially, and culturally. It seeks to provide a rich, engaging curriculum while encouraging positive behavior. It celebrates abilities and believes in the possibilities of students. My classroom will be an extension of these ideals and goals...a place to be brave, be kind, celebrate mistakes, and work hard.
My Project
As we continue in distance learning, the opportunity to share diverse, high quality literature and stories with our students is vital. It is my hope that the power of narrative can also be a way to connect and delve into social studies as well.
As our students seek to understand the power of our local governenment and the way that they, as 8 and 9 year olds, can have a voice, it is my desire to provide books that allow them to dig deeper and ask hard questions. The books that I have chosen will allow us to think through questions of immigration, civics, community activism and having a voice. Thank you for making this possible for my students, in spite of the learning platform and distance.
