We are a Title I magnet school that has been in existence since 1996. We are a full magnet offering a Visual and Performing Arts program to all of our students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Our vision reflects our school’s spirit: “Through the arts, students will be inspired to become creative problem solvers, productive citizens, and lifelong learners.”
Our students truly LOVE nonfiction books!
Biographies, dinosaurs, automobiles, sports, science, wild animals, pets, history - the list goes on and on! Because so few of our students have the opportunity to travel even 50 miles away from their homes, these books have the ability of transporting them through space and time in a way that they don't have in their daily lives.
My students crave information about the world around them. Beginning with my 1st graders, I introduce them to parts of the world, bringing in my passport and showing them pictures of all of the exotic places that they can travel to one day. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders love it when I send them back through history as I book talk the newest historical fiction or nonfiction book that arrives in the Media Center.
Whether it is the Hindenburg, the Great Depression, or Antarctica, my students hunger for every detail about historical events and the places so far removed from their every day life.
This popular series of nonfiction books are well written and full of interesting facts that appeal to even the most reluctant readers. The series consists of Who Is (Was), Where Is, and What Is (Was) topics ranging from the Beatles to the Taj Mahal to Hurrican Katrina.
