What in the World Happened Here! American History ESL Style
Help me give my students a better understanding of their new world using graphic novels, leveled readers, and current topic books to explore people and events from American History.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
All of my students are high school aged English Language Learners, who are new to America. Not only are they ELLs, these students are also SIFE Students (Students with Interrupted Formal Education) who did not reach high school in their home country. These are unique students who face incredible language barriers in addition to the culture shock of dealing with life in a new country.
Many of my unique students love to read but lack the English skills to be successful.
They are eager to learn and always ask for more academic support. I want to provide these students with a classroom library filled with supplemental reading materials about important people and events in American History to help develop their literacy skills while simultaneously learning about history. These students constantly express gratitude for the experiences I provide for them. I cannot wait to share this new reading opportunity with them. They will be elated!
My Project
Books funded by this project will provide a classroom library of graphic novels and leveled readers to be used in different capacities. For example, students will have opportunities to check out books to read at home. Additionally, the books will be available during class for students who finish classwork early, or they can be used as an independent learning center. Finally, I will use some of the books as read alouds to support lessons in American History. These are just some of uses this classroom library will provide as well as giving my class an extra level of literacy learning within a history class setting because are all literacy teachers!
