My Students

Have you ever wondered how an event impacts a story? This project will show my students how changing one event in a story can impact the entire story and plot structure.

I teach a 5th and 6th grade combination class.

My students come from a high poverty neighborhood where more than 75% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch. There is a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military, to name a few. Our students also come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with a large portion being Hispanic, Punjabi and African American. Additionally, we have a large population of English Language Learners. With such diversity, it is to be expected that each student is going to have a very divergent range of personal, social, emotional, and educational needs when compared to schools that serve a more homogeneous population.

My Project

We will be using this book as a whole class read. The book is an amazing twist on the story of Aladdin and is a perfect example to teach plot structure and the impact an event has on the plot. This book goes along the normal Aladdin story until Jafar (the villain) steals the lamp and wishes to become the sultan. We will be keep tracking of the plot structure as we read the book on a large poster paper. The students will be comparing this story with the original and identifying all of the differences caused by one change in event. We will also be talking about the change in the characters and how that one event change has caused them to change to their new circumstances.

This project will make our class reads much more exciting by allowing them to read something they are familiar with but with a new twist.

My students will learn about plot structure and how important each event really is to the plot and to the characters. These books will bring a new light and excitement into my classroom.
