My students need high quality books for high quality reading. Books are about topics that support 3rd Grade curriculum such as ancient civilizations, animals, and moon cycles.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class consists of students who are always enthusiastic about learning new things. They enjoy checking out nonfiction books to learn more about a topic, or understand something they read in nonfiction. However, my class and school consist of many low income families, where up to 50% of our students each year are at or near the poverty level.
As a result, many of my students only have access to high quality nonfiction books at our school library or my classroom library.
Part of our district's reading instruction is for students to read a variety of books- a "reader's diet". And my class is severely lacking in the nonfiction department. The goal of this project is to build up the nonfiction section of my classroom library so that I can broaden the "diet" of all my readers.
My Project
Books will be placed in the classroom library for students to read for their enjoyment or to learn more about a topic. Books selected are based on our state's standards on ancient civilizations, animals and natural cycles. There are also books about anatomy and other historical events to be paired with fictional books. These materials will be use in small group to discuss text features, questioning, and finding evidence within text. We will also use the books as mentor text when writing nonfiction.
The books vary in levels to meet the needs of my diverse classroom.
Reading levels range from 1st grade to 4th grade so all students have access to nonfiction books. As students progress in reading, the goal is to have them discuss books with each other to create a community of learners and readers.
