Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Global Citizen leadership class is based on community partnerships and real-world solutions to problems. We are a class and club of action, hard work and building positive relationships with others. Students are challenged to follow their dreams of a better world and are given the tools to see their leadership projects come to fruition. Our school is located in a very low socioeconomic area and our students are often in need of great amounts of community assistance just to survive. Our students need a great amount of resources just to fulfill basic needs of food, hygiene, warm clothing and school supplies. The students give back to the community through service projects and maintaining a garden that donates food to local shelters and pantries.
Our goal is to challenge students to rise up and to give back to their community, to be the givers of assistance and to build lifelong confidence through positive outcomes.
The students are engaged in addressing the Sustainability Goals or SDGs that are grounded in challenging youth with creating STEAM based solutions for world problems that involve water, climate change, food scarcity, sustainable cities, peace, engineering and partnerships.
My Project
My students are researching and learning about the UN Sustainability Goals and are searching for ways to solve them. We need Chromebooks to help them research and to possibly open a door into a new career pathway of humanitarian interest, NGOs, international relations/affairs and understanding the global landscape. Many of the issues have film, experts and speeches that need to be viewed and heard in the process of research. My students need headphones to pursue their research at an independent pace and to share with others. My students have a passion for global issues, for complex problems and solving those problems in a global way. They have a passion for learning and sharing that learning with other students to build a movement of youth that is engaged, willing to serve and full of fresh ideas for the new age.
