One of my favorite reasons for teaching third grade is that they are like little sponges when it comes to learning about their world. They have some ideas and some MISconceptions, but LOVE finding out the real truth!! An especially exciting set of new awareness for them is what really happens to plants....and, hey, what is that plant, anyway? I would like to have each of my students to first find a plant (tree, grass,shrub, native, cultivated, weed, whatever) that fascinates them. We will take several nature walks when school begins to find them. Once a student adopts a plant, we will "visit" it weekly. We will sketch it, describe it, describe its environment, soil, etc. and will note the weather. the date, and time of day each time we go. I have already gotten the notebooks for their journals. What I would like to be able to do, in addition to this, is take photos of our plants each month. This will also help as I teach about earth cycles and seasons. They will be able to truly see the changes from month to month and season to season of their plant. We would truly appreciate having 11 disposable cameras (36 exp., 35mm).
