Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of eager-to-learn fourth graders in the South Bronx! 93% of the children are from low income homes. I began teaching at P.S. 18X six years ago and have loved everyday. As a teacher in a school that is in need of improvement, I have faced many challenges. One being, a classroom that is very hot and tight for 27 nine and ten-year olds.
The carpet we would like is the perfect tool to help with this problem. As we all know when one feels hot and sticky, reading and writing might be one of the last things on our minds. This carpet can give each child their own individual space without squeezing them together. We follow a Balanced Literacy Program where we do three workshops a day (reading, writing, and math); therefore, we spend a lot of time on the carpet. This is a wonderful program because it allows me to zero in on each child's individual needs.
This is a giant-sized, spacious carpet with room for up to 30 children. There are 5 rows and each row is broken into 6 color coordinated squares. Each child would then get their individual square to sit in, take notes, read, write, and use math manipulative comfortably. They would be motivated to learn and work at all times.
The carpet can be used during whole class instruction: reading and writing mini-lessons, sharing time, and math mini-lessons. Each child would have their individual space to work properly and not complain about being cramped. This is especially important when the weather starts to get warmer because our room does not have air conditioning. In addition to whole class usage, I would be able to meet with small groups because the rows are color coordinated. Guided reading would run much smoother. I would assign each group a color and a day of the week. Each group would automatically know when to gather on the carpet. This of course would be a great management tool, thus, increasing the time the children spend learning.
