My Project

As an English/Spanish Language Arts teacher, I face this question multiple times a day. When students look up these words in a print dictionary, they are flipping through its pages, they are getting so much more than the meaning.

Print dictionaries fuel curiosity and give their brains a workout.

To find a word, they have to consider order and sequencing, alphabetization, spelling, context, and syntax.

Using a print dictionary slows things down. When kids pause for a moment to explore the meaning of a word, they enjoy a much-needed break from the task they're working on. Even a small break in action may inspire a new line of thinking or an innovative idea.

With print dictionaries, children are often inspired, more focused, and fully engaged in learning.
