Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my second grade students are Hispanic and from non-English speaking low-income families. Because parents have language barriers, many of my students do not have enough practice at home. They struggle with vocabulary development, using vocabulary in context, recognizing parts of speech, decoding, word recognition, and spelling.
Second grade is the grade in which students are learning to read fluently, and learning to enrich their vocabulary through reading and writing. Many of the dictionaries the school supplies are obsolete. The dictionaries I have for student use often do not have the second grade vocabulary words in it. It places me in the position of being a living dictionary for 20 students, because I become their primary source for unknown words. Often, my students read and write less because they are so focused on correct spelling and decoding, as opposed to content.
I need new children dictionaries to provide my students access to vocabulary and word meanings that they are unable to access through the use of the obsolete dictionaries in the classroom. These dictionaries will help my students become independent writers by enabling them to focus, not on spelling, but on content.
With your support, you will enable my students to gain the confidence they need to become better writers and speakers. It will also help them to enrich their vocabulary through the use of the thesaurus. These dictionaries will make it possible for my students to become more independent by enabling to proofread their own work when writing, and decode unfamiliar words when reading. I will also be able to work individually with more students because I will have fewer students commanding my attention for proofreading and decoding help. This generous donation will set my students down a path that leads towards college. Research, writing, and reading are such a large part of the college curriculum and it is thus wise to begin preparing them for this endeavor one step at a time.
