My students come from all over the world, from different families and financial backgrounds, but they have one thing in common. They all LOVE learning! Our school is at the edge of a rural city a block from the beach, and it serves a diverse group of children from over 15 different countries. Of my 20 students, 12 are English Language Learners, and more than half receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My class is a vibrant group of learners who are excited by project-based learning activities, love to create, explore, and manipulate, and love to share their learning with others.
They are engineers, architects, problem-solvers, team players, makers, creators, and hands-on learners. They are energetic, silly, and extremely active children who love to get up and move. They make me excited to come to work each day!
My Project
Second grade is a very important year for young readers. They build their confidence in reading and jump into chapter books! For some of our learners, that jump isn't easy as easy. I have been on a mission to build my classroom library so that it reflects my students, their backgrounds and interests.
Giving students a choice in what they read will keep them pushing through when the reading gets tough.
Our school year started 2 weeks ago and we have already built a strong classroom family dynamic. I asked my students to go through a book magazine and choose 3 books they were interested in. Almost every single child chose the Dog Man Series! So for this project I chose the books that they requested! The ones that excite them and make them WANT to read!
