Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school science students are part of a Dual Language program in Ohio. Many of my students are learning English as a second language and therefore struggle to understand the academic language used within the textbooks. However, their curiosity about the world and their ability to absorb information is amazing! A great researched-based strategy that will help ensure my students' success is to provide as many hands-on activities and visuals as possible. This allows them to explore topics in ways other than traditional textbooks. Plus, hands-on is what science is all about! My students love to learn and work very well in small group settings.
It is pure joy to see their eyes light up when they have their ah-ha moment!
My hope is that they continue their love for science and never stop questioning how things work.
My Project
Let's make their first chance at dissection a memorable one! I am eager to introduce my middle school students to the world of dissection and food chains. In this lab, students will be able to discover what owls eat and how the food chain is directly affected by the life of owls. Just like in real life, students will have to connect science with language arts as they will be expected to first learn about the life and characteristics of owls to predict what they might find during dissection. Students will also improve much needed social skills as they work with their partner to discover this knowledge and report their findings to their peers.
