My Students

I am so blessed with the group of second graders I was given my first year teaching. Together we have created a positive classroom community, and students genuinely care about themselves and their classmates. I received two new students around Christmas time, and my class immediately made them feel welcome and part of the group. As a whole, their enthusiasm regarding learning is very inspiring, and positively affirms my decision to enter this profession.

Many of my students are avid readers and are overjoyed when one of their literacy centers is devoted to silent or partner reading.

I strongly encourage students to read aloud, and to listen to someone else read aloud as often as possible. While I do read aloud to my students every day after lunch, I feel they need more exposure to listening to someone else read a text of their choosing. We talk about “What good readers do,” (reading fluently, reading with expression, using different voices for different characters, etc.) and my hope is to provide my students with more opportunities to experience this.

My Project

We begin each day with our literacy block, which includes grammar, reading, and writing. Being able to incorporate a listening center can provide enrichment for students who finish tasks on time, as well as support for students who need a little extra boost with their reading and fluency skills.

A listening center will provide all students the opportunity to explore new genres, challenge themselves, practice reading fluency, and develop an understanding of what it is good readers do.

I was gifted a listening center library several months ago, but currently do not have the necessary equipment to use it with my students. I have not shared this information with my students yet, as I did not want to get their hopes up. Having what we need to implement this center would be absolutely incredible, and I know my kiddos would LOVE it!
